It’s that time again, the wait for the first real ski session of the year. The rollerskis are starting to feel stale, the cold mornings are teasing snow, and your legs are practically begging for glide.
The good news? You don’t have to wait for winter anymore. Across Scandinavia and the Alps, a growing list of destinations are offering “early snow loops” , meaning they’ve stockpiled last winter’s snow, built snowfarming loops, and fired up the snow guns to give you a head start.
Here’s your cheat sheet for where to find real skiing before most people have packed away their hiking boots.
🇫🇮 Finland: Vuokatti Leads the Pack
Vuokatti opens the earliest of all — its “First Snow Track” opens around 10 October each year, with about 1.5 km initially and plans to extend up to ~9-10 km. They use massive snow-storage systems (tens of thousands of cubic metres) and a ski tunnel to keep training efficient year-round. For any serious skier or club who wants to hit snow now, Vuokatti is a standout.
🇳🇴 Norway: Consistent, Cold, and Serious About It
Norway has practically industrialized early-snow skiing.Trysilfjellet Arena opens first, with a 5 km loop and full biathlon range on 31 October. Beitostølen and Sjusjøen follow a day later, both relying on massive snow storage piles that survived the summer under sawdust covers.
The vibe? Focused, no-nonsense, and packed with pros. You’ll see World Cup athletes, juniors, and weekend warriors all crammed into the same perfect 2 km stretch — everyone pretending they’re not racing each other.
🇸🇪 Sweden: A Storage-Snow Science
Swedes have turned “tidligsnø” into a competitive art form. Idre Fjäll opens 17 October, with Vålådalen close behind on 18 October, boasting 30 % more snow in storage than last year. Bruksvallarna joins the party on 25 October, and Orsa Grönklitt isn’t far behind.
These places now market “snow guarantees” as confidently as ski resorts used to promise après-ski. And it works — teams from across Europe book their early camps here.
🇨🇭🇮🇹🇦🇹 Central Europe: The Alpine Preseason
Further south, high altitude is the key.Davos fires up its 4 km snowfarming track on 31 October. Livigno opens around the same time with a 5 km technical ring made from stored snow — a favorite among World Cup teams for its early conditions and high elevation.
Ramsau am Dachstein’s glacier track (about 1.5 km) is already operational when temperatures allow — you’ll see plenty of athletes training there before the first big FIS races.Tignes in France and Bessans in Savoie also guarantee early skiing, thanks to their glacier access and consistent sub-zero temps.
Why Early Snow Matters
This isn’t just for bragging rights. For athletes and dedicated skiers, early on-snow training smooths the transition from summer training to racing. It’s where teams test skis, fine-tune technique, and recalibrate pacing before the first FIS points are on the line.
And for everyday skiers — it’s the best cure for October fatigue.
